Polution .

Egypt has been ranked as the 27th most-polluted country in the world in 2021 due to its high levels of PM2.5 and PM10 particulate matter, which mainly come from transportation, industry, and the open burning of solid organic waste material. Dust blown in from surrounding desert regions also contributes to the pollution. The lack of rain exacerbates the problem, as falling rain helps to clean the air. Carbon monoxide emissions from vehicles mix with the PM particles, further worsening the air quality. Climate change-induced extreme weather patterns also have a direct impact on public health, leading to serious illnesses and even death. Despite the high levels of air pollution in cities like Cairo, reducing carbon emissions is not a priority on the national agenda, as Egypt’s contribution to global emissions is less than 1%. Air pollution poses a significant threat to public health, shortening the life expectancy of Egyptians by two years on average due to morbidity or disability. It was responsible for over 90,000 premature deaths in 2019 alone. Air pollution-related illnesses in 2016 included heart disease, stroke, and respiratory diseases and cancer. The economic burden of poor health due to climate change and air pollution is estimated at 1.35% of GDP, or EGP47 billion, in Greater Cairo alone. The primary source of PM2.5 air pollution in Cairo is road transport, with ageing private cars and taxis accounting for 80% of the problem. Agricultural slash and burn and industrial power are the second and third highest sources of pollution, respectively. Other sources of air pollution include waste mismanagement, desert dust, biomass burning, and domestic and commercial combustion. Despite some government action and donor support, the true benefits of reduced air pollution are not yet being realized. There are many practical steps that can be taken to reduce air pollution and promote clean air. One key approach is to reduce vehicle use and burn less fuel. This can be achieved through carpooling, biking, taking public transportation, telecommuting, and using electric vehicles. Additionally, keeping vehicles in good repair, checking tire pressure regularly, and fixing exhaust and oxygen sensor problems as soon as possible can help reduce fuel consumption and air pollution.

Another important step is to avoid burning household garbage and using backyard fires, as these activities can release harmful pollutants into the air. Instead, individuals can contact their county about arranging for trash hauling services and limit backyard fires in urban areas.

Planting and caring for trees can also help improve air quality by filtering pollutants and absorbing carbon dioxide. Switching to electric or hand-powered lawn equipment can also reduce pollution from gas-powered engines.

Efforts to conserve energy can also help reduce air pollution, such as choosing energy-efficient appliances and heating systems, getting an energy audit, and turning off electrical devices when not in use.

Individuals can also become champions for clean air by promoting and supporting programs that help reduce air pollution in their local communities. Local governments can pass local ordinances, create incentives for beneficial behaviors, and promote and educate residents on best practices. Programs such as GreenStep Cities, Small Business Environmental Assistance, and Minnesota GreenCorps can also provide valuable support for businesses, organizations, and school districts looking to reduce air pollution and comply with environmental rules.

To prevent and reduce water pollution, it is important to manage household hazardous waste properly and dispose of it at designated collection sites.

Maintaining septic systems and sewer lines, fixing leaks, using low-flow fixtures, avoiding overuse of fertilizers and pesticides, and picking up and disposing of pet waste in the trash can also help reduce water pollution. Additionally, reducing the use of single-use plastics by using reusable containers and bags and properly disposing of plastic waste can make a significant difference in preventing plastics from contaminating water sources and harming marine life and ecosysteTo combat climate change, individuals, communities, and governments must take immediate action. Some key ways to achieve this include reducing your carbon footprint by using public transportation or energy-efficient appliances, supporting renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, planting trees to absorb carbon dioxide, promoting sustainable agriculture practices and reducing meat consumption, advocating for policies that support clean energy and public transportation, and reducing water consumption through simple steps like taking shorter showers and using water-efficient appliances.

By working together to take these steps, we can all make a significant impact in stopping climate change and protecting the planet for future generations.ms. By taking these steps, we can all play a role in protecting our water sources and promoting a healthier environment.
